Outdoors

We are so lucky to have a large spacious outdoor area for the children to spread out and play. We have a large playground area that at the moment also doubles up for us to do the daily mile. In September we will be having a new purpose made daily mile on the field which will help our children become fit and healthy. We have a forest area, outdoor gym equipment, a climbing wall, as well as undercover seating areas. At Hornsea Burton we also have a peace garden that was donated by The Lions Charity.

Both schools have a group of responsible, well-trained play leaders who organise games every playtime to help our children play together using important skills such as respect, cooperation, negotiating, team work and problem solving.

We also have our peace garden, a place where children can go and relax in a quiet, calm environment. It’s aim is to help the children focus on their body, mind and spirit during their busy day. To give them space and tranquillity, helping them to be the best learners they can be.

More About Our Forest School.

  • 1. Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.

    2. Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a lifelong relationship between the learner and the natural world.

    3. Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.

    4. Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.

    5. Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.

    6. Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners, who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.

  • Forest School is a unique way of building independence and self-esteem in young children, exposing them to the natural world at a time where it is vital for children to understand their impact on the environment. It is a child-centred and child-led programme that provides the opportunity for the children to use their personal learning style to complete various activities.

Forest School is an opportunity for the children at Hornsea Burton and Skipsea Primary schools to have new, creative experiences in the outdoor environment in a safe way. Children will have opportunities to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and most importantly to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others.

Through purposeful and careful planning of Forest School experiences, we strive to increase self-esteem, improve children’s concentration, attendance, behaviour and academic achievement. .

  • When Your child is scheduled to take part in Forest School, we ask that they bring in clothes and footwear which is suitable for the weather. Waterproof trousers and wellies are recommended in the winter as the site becomes very muddy. Pupils enjoy a range of activities that include den making, camp-fire safety, bridge making, making bow and arrows, insect hunting, as well as using nature to be creative and many more exciting ventures.

  • The children will experience a minimum of six sessions in the Forest School in order to immerse themselves in nature and deepen their knowledge and understanding of living things that surrounds them in their local environment. The Forest School space will be utilised all year round, with lessons adapted to compliment the ever-changing conditions, resources and challenges of the natural world through the seasons. Children in the Early Years Foundation stage access the forest school weekly as an enhanced outdoor learning provision.
